SINGAPORE: Formula 1 may be the epitome of excess, with some spectators shelling out over S$50,000 for their F1 experience. But there are still lots of fun activities in Singapore over the F1 weekend, at a fraction of that sum.
Singapore is fast becoming a playground for the rich and famous. To gain entry into the exclusive Paddock Club, where all the F1 action starts and where the best celebrity sightings are to be had, online offers start at S$8,000.
A better deal would be the Ultimate F1 Experience package. At around S$10,600, the package includes a three-day ticket to the Paddock Club and VIP treatment at top stores, restaurants and nightclubs.
As for souvenirs, one could take home an F1 driver in the form of portraits at a price tag of S$45,000 each. The portraits, by Brazilian neo-pop artist Romero Britto, were specially commissioned by the Opera Gallery.
Gilles Gyan, chairman of Opera Gallery, said: "We had a very big success yesterday, we sold two pieces already... Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button."
However, those looking for a cheaper F1 experience can first head down to Clarke Quay, where you can catch all the steep curves and sharp turns at the Johnnie Walker Black Lounge.
The heart-stopping action on the big screen starts at 7pm and entry is free. But if souvenirs are what you are after, the cheapest and possibly the thinnest piece of official F1 merchandise you can lay hands on is a set of three postcards that costs just S$6.50.
To crown off the F1 weekend, one can also get a free glimpse of the F1 trophy or take a photo with Singa the Lion, which has been dressed up in the F1 racing gear.
Exact replicas of the F1 trophy are available at selected Royal Selangor stores, while the courtesy lions are placed at the Singapore Visitors Centres at Changi Airport and Orchard Road.
