SINGAPORE: Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease among those 55 and above and as part of a week of events to raise awareness of this problem, 120 elderly were given free eye screenings on Sunday.

They were also screened for other diseases such as glaucoma and cataracts.

The initiative was organised by the Lions Club and Singapore Polytechnic.

They also roped in sponsors to provide free spectacles.

Doctors said macular degeneration is treatable especially if discovered early.

But many are unaware of its symptoms.

Furthermore, a complete eye-check costs between S$80 and S$100, more than what some can afford.

Christopher Ng, lecturer, Optometry, Singapore Polytechnic, said: "For most people, they either go to an optical shop to buy a pair of glasses and most of them do not undergo a full eye examination to check for AMD. If AMD is unchecked, the condition is going to deteriorate and eventually it may lead to blindness." - CNA/vm
