SINGAPORE: The Manpower Ministry will be taking a tougher stand in efforts to curb the illegal deployment of foreign workers such as maids.
This came after the ministry revoked the licences of 11 employment agencies last month.
According to the Association of Employment Agencies Singapore, it is also stepping up efforts to increase the awareness of its members on the issue of illegal deployment.
It has also warned that membership will be revoked if members are found guilty of such activities.
On its part, the Indonesian Embassy said it is encouraged by the ministry's stand and will step up its efforts to implement them in Indonesia.
The ministry also urged employers to verify that an employment agency is licensed before engaging their services.
The penalty for illegal employment without a valid Work Permit is a fine equivalent to between two and four years of the foreign domestic worker (FDW) levy, and/or imprisonment for up to one year.
For subsequent convictions, the errant employer will face mandatory imprisonment.
Employers who illegally deploy their FDWs can be fined up to S$5,000. In addition, the errant employer will be permanently barred from employing FDWs. - CNA/vm
