SINGAPORE : Construction of two medical clinics in quake-hit Padang, Indonesia by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is making good progress.
The 30-member SAF engineering team started building the clinics on October 11.
Located in Padang Pasir, Padang and Koto Bangko in Pariaman, the clinics will replace the two that collapsed during the earthquake.
Already, support structures have been constructed. Over the next few days, the SAF team and Indonesian personnel will install the wall panels, roofs, electrical works and interior furnishing.
The clinics will be handed over to the Indonesian authorities within the week.
Separately, the Ministry of Defence said the medical situation at Pariaman Public Hospital is stabilising, with fewer A&E cases being attended to.
The situation is also stabilising at the mobile medical clinic in Koto Bangko, set up by the SAF team to provide primary healthcare in the more remote areas affected by the earthquake.
The head of the SAF Medical Team, LTC (Dr) Mohamad Rosman, said: "When we started operations at the Pariaman Public Hospital more than a week ago, we treated many patients who had earthquake-related injuries.
"The numbers have reduced over the past few days and what we are seeing now are mainly non-earthquake-related cases like breathlessness and other common ailments."
Since starting operations on Oct 4, the 54-strong SAF medical team in Pariaman has attended to about 980 A&E cases and performed a total of 91 surgeries. - CNA /ls
