SINGAPORE: The recent earthquake which hit West Sumatra has dented the education system in areas affected by the disaster.
In Pariaman alone, which is one of the provinces affected by the tragedy, nearly 2,000 schools were destroyed. However, some are ensuring that students return to school as soon as possible.
Eight-year-old Ella is one of the lucky few to be able to attend classes – all thanks to the efforts of teachers at the Tiga Kampong Dalam Elementary School and Singapore's Mercy Relief.
They managed to get the canvas for a temporary set-up, after the earthquake left the original school in rubble.
"Since Mercy Relief is focused on education as well, we will donate three giant tents soon," said Juliah Bee, manager, International Programme, Mercy Relief.
Most schools have not been able to proceed with rebuilding works due to insufficient funds, but help is on the way.
