SINGAPORE: The earthquake that hit West Sumatra more than two weeks ago has made 80 per cent of the houses there unsafe to live in.
Villagers in Sikucur Pariaman are slowly picking up the pieces in the aftermath of the devastation.
Some are cleaning up the mess left behind by the earthquake while others have resumed business.
Authorities are trying to convince affected villagers to move to safer ground, to prevent further casualties in the event of another catastrophe.
But many are reluctant to leave the place that has been their home for most of their lives.
"They are experiencing trauma. They want to stay near their homes. Belongings kept at home have to be looked after so that they are not taken away," said Ali Jasman, the village head.
