As of 11pm Monday night, the total amount pledged was S$1,212,146.

The two-hour event - which was aired live on MediaCorp's Channel 5, Suria, TV mobile and the outdoor screens at Orchard Central - featured local and international stars.

"Watching the TV images of the floods made me realise how protected we are here," said Ms d'Silva, who helped write the song.

Also taking the stage were other radio and TV personalities including Ann Kok and Darren Lim, finalists and winners of Singapore Idol, Anugerah and Vasantham Star.

There were also special performances by representatives from the Smart Alliance group of broadcasters - Indonesian singer Rini Wulandari from MNC and Thai star Mint Ardhawadee from BBTV.

Other stars such as Adrian Pang, Zoe Tay and Suhaimi Yusof manned the phone lines, taking donations of S$50 and above.

Said Mr Pang: "It's gratifying that people are moved by what they've seen and heard and want to help. And (the victims) need all the help they can get."

Singapore's John Lee, who survived the earthquake in Padang after being trapped for more than 30 hours under the rubble, recounted his experience at the event.

All production costs for Project Hope were borne by MediaCorp.
