SINGAPORE: MediaCorp's fund raising event "Project Hope" has raised S$1.3 million so far. The proceeds will go towards helping victims of typhoon Ketsana and the Padang earthquake.
More than 100 MediaCorp artistes and ASEAN celebrities took the stage for two hours on Monday night for a good cause.
Donations started pouring in the minute the lines were open.
"I think MediaCorp has done a great job in raising this significant amount of money which will go a long way towards helping these people," said Christopher Chua, secretary general, Red Cross Society Singapore.
The funds raised will be used for disaster relief operations by the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and Mercy Relief.
"As we speak right now, there is also the tropical storm Lupit which is looming around Manila, these are things that we as ASEAN neighbours will have to come together and extend as much support," said Hassan Ahmad, CEO, Mercy Relief Singapore.
Teck-Meng Yong, director, Habitat for Humanity Singapore said: "Our experience showed that by providing a permanent house, they will get their lives together and the community will then be revived."
MediaCorp personalities were on hand to man a special donation line for contributions above S$50.
"Well my contribution is very little, it is just my time to sit there and take phone calls. Surprisingly, I got a S$50,000 donation, which was huge. I am still recovering from it," said Timothy Go, presenter, Channel NewsAsia.
Donation lines are open till midnight on October 26.
Individuals who wish to donate S$10, S$20, S$50 can call 1900-112-5010/5020/5050 respectively. Cheque donations can also be made to "MediaCorp Charity Fund", with "Project Hope" written on the back of the cheque.
Repeat telecast of the charity show will be on Sunday from 11am to 1pm on Suria, and from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Channel 5
The show is hosted by presenters Michelle Chong, Khairudin Saharom and 98.7FM's Rosalyn Lee.
