SINGAPORE: The Diabetic Society of Singapore has joined hands with the National Eye Centre to highlight the complication of diabetic eye disease and blindness.
The collaboration comes as Singapore marks World Diabetes Day on Saturday.
The organisations say there is a lack of awareness on blindness and sight impairment resulting from diabetes as more people are aware of other diabetes-related complications like kidney failure and leg amputations.
So this year, the organisations hope to drive home the message that early prevention and care can also save one's sight.
Diabetic retinopathy is a significant complication of diabetes and leading cause of vision impairment in Singapore.
One in three diabetics has diabetic retinopathy while 10 per cent have vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy.
To commemorate World Diabetes Day, free eye checks and health screenings were offered to residents at a community event in Bishan.
