Song competition launched for Youth Olympic Games 2010

SINGAPORE: Calling all budding songwriters – organisers of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games are having a "Sing! Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games" competition.

The contest is divided into individual and team categories, and is open to everyone regardless of race, age or nationality.

Each song must be between three and five minutes, and can be in any language. Lyrics, however, should celebrate the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

Five winners will be picked and the top entry will win S$1,000. The one in the second place gets S$800, third S$500 and the two merit entries are tagged with a cash prize of S$250 each. All winners will also be awarded trophies.

Organisers said on Thursday that entries must be submitted through the official website by December 20.

Zainudin Nordin, chairman of Community Outreach Advisory Committee, Singapore YOG Organising Committee, said: "It is a bottom-up initiative, people need to feel that they are going to celebrate this Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games and also own part of it.

"The creativity that they have – the songs, the ideas – the way we want to put it for them is to make it as accessible as possible. By using new media for the community to submit their songs, (entries) could be judged by the panel of judges and at the same time, by the community itself."
