SINGAPORE: It was Grandparents' Day on Sunday, and more than 5,000 people came out to celebrate it.
Grandparents and members of their families, such as former Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan and his two grandsons, took part in a 1.7km brisk-walk from the Chinese Gardens to the Science Centre Singapore.
Among the attractions at the carnival at the Science Centre was a group of belly-dancing grannies and a multi-generational Amazing Race.
"Grandparents play a very significant role in society and within families, sometimes even assuming the role of parents for the second time. It is important that we stop and truly express our appreciation for them.
"Many of them look after the grandkids, tutor them in schoolwork, and most importantly, act as links in passing on traditions, culture and good moral values," said Mr Gerard Ee, president of Council for Third Age (C3A).
"Many grandparents I know connect with their grandkids using Facebook, competing with them on the Wii, and even use Twitter. So they are really quite hip, and it has made the strength of that bond between generations even stronger."
C3A, an independent organisation that promotes active ageing in Singapore, organised the event.
