KUALA LUMPUR - One man was killed and 19 workers were injured Monday in an explosion at a newly built Malaysian shopping centre which police said was likely caused by a gas leak.
The blast occurred at the food court of the Aeon Jusco Mall in the southern state of Malacca which had been due to open on Tuesday.
"We believe it was caused by the gas pipe. The mall is new and yet to open and the workers were installing and testing the gas pipes at the time," said district police chief Salehhudin Abdul Rahman.
"The explosion took place on the ground floor, it affected the food court area as well as a few shops," he told AFP.
"One man was killed, we are still investigating his identity."
Salehhudin said that workers from Indonesia and Myanmar were among the injured and that nine were in critical condition. - AFP/vm
