SINGAPORE: All mosques in Singapore will be collecting donations from the public to aid humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.

This came after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the island last week, resulting in over 200,000 deaths and over three million people displaced.

The mosques will be accepting contributions from members of the public on behalf of the Rahmatan Lil Alamin (Blessings-To-All) Foundation.

The foundation was initiated by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).

It was launched in July 2009 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to spread the message of compassion for all humanity and to further spread the ethos of the Singapore Muslim community of always being a community that is a blessing to all, regardless of race or religion.

Donation boxes will be placed at all 69 mosques from Wednesday to Friday.

The boxes will be marked "Singapore Muslim Community's Contribution to the Humanitarian Relief Effort in Haiti".

Cash donations can also be made at the MUIS building at Singapore Islamic Hub, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702.

Cheque donations can also be sent to the above address. The cheques should be made payable to "MUIS" with words "Humanitarian Relief Effort in Haiti" written on its back.

The proceeds from the collection will be conveyed to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC).

The global relief organisation is presently on the ground in Haiti organising the emergency relief operations especially in the areas of providing temporary shelter, restoring water and sanitation facilities as well as medical and psychological care for the affected population.

New Creation Church has committed to give US$30,000 to relief efforts. Of this, US$20,000 will be channelled through the Singapore Red Cross Society to provide emergency supplies and medical care, build shelters as well as restore water and sanitation facilities.

In addition, US$10,000 will be given to Love A Child, Inc, a non-profit Christian humanitarian organisation that has received the highest rating for financial accountability in the United States.

The organisation has worked in Haiti since 1972. Its outreach programmes in Haiti include an orphanage, schools, medical clinics, and food distribution programmes that feed thousands of Haitian families.

Through this organisation, New Creation Church's funds will go towards the provision of much-needed food, water and medical care to the victims in Haiti. - CNA/vm
