SINGAPORE: A majority of Singaporeans agree with the government on many policies but have expressed anxieties over immigration issues.
This came through in a telephone survey commissioned by the government feedback channel REACH to gather views on the recent National Day Rally speech by the prime minister.
The telephone survey was conducted on 902 Singapore citizens from August 31 to September 7.
More than 90 per cent of those surveyed either agreed or strongly agreed with the rationale for many government policies on the economy and education, including a call by the government for workers to raise productivity and upgrade knowledge and skills.
On the hot topic of immigration, a lower level of agreement was recorded with people expressing anxieties over the perceived competition for jobs and housing.
Only 58 per cent, or close to six out of 10 respondents, agreed that Singapore should supplement the local pool by staying open and recruiting talent from the world.
On whether Singaporean jobs have been protected through the measures to restrict inflow of foreign workers and higher levies, the response was again lower at 56 per cent.
REACH said this response was not unexpected as Singaporeans tended to be more emotional on this issue.
REACH Chairman Amy Khor said the channel also received more feedback this year than last year over the National Day Rally speech with about 1,700 views.
She said the "lively engagements" via discussion forums, webchats and public forums showed that Singaporeans have views and want their views to be heard.
