YOG medallists receive scholarships totalling S$150,000

SINGAPORE : Team Singapore medal winners at the recent Youth Olympic Games (YOG) received scholarships totalling $150,000 from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation on Wednesday.
Swimmer Rainer Ng and paddler Isabelle Li each received S$25,000 for their silver medal achievements.
Three others - taekwondo exponents Daryl Tan and Nurul Shafinas, and sailor Audrey Yong - got S$17,500 each for their bronze medals.
Archer Abdul Dayyan received S$10,000 for his team bronze, and the football boys got S$37,500 for their bronze.
The athletes can use the funds for training and even education.
"I need to sit down and discuss with my coach and the association on what are the plans, like where we decide to (use) the money on," said Ng, YOG silver medallist for swimming. .
The scholarships aim to motivate the athletes to work harder in their sports.
More than that, the scholarships should motivate the athletes to work harder in their sports.
"I hope that the young athletes have got the experience, the appetite and hunger now, to want to do even better. And I think the infrastructure is there," said Deputy PM and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean. He is also the president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.
The NTUC FairPrice Foundation also gave out scholarships to Team Singapore medal winners at the 2009 Asian Youth Games, and it's looking at other ways to support local athletes. - CNA /ls
