SINGAPORE: Though much of Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam's February 15 speech touched on the government's financial policy, many MPs, during the Budget debate, raised issues concerning other ministries.
These issues ranged from environmental matters to strengthening bonds.
Summing up the debate on Thursday, the Second Finance Minister assured them that his Cabinet colleagues would address the issues during the discussions in the Committee of Supply beginning on Friday.
He said the government agrees that Singapore must stand out as an environmentally conscious city and this means maintaining high environmental standards.
That is why the government is doing so much to promote good air and water quality.
Singapore also has to play its part in the global effort but, Mr Tharman said, the city-state has to be realistic.
Being small, what it does cannot make a significant difference to global warming or ozone.
MPs had also brought up matters involving keeping strong family ties, population challenges and social integration.
Mr Tharman said Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng would be elaborating on how the government would be addressing issues of immigration, including the integration of new immigrants and measures to support marriage and parenthood.
The Committee of Supply begins its sessions on Friday, kicking off with the debate on the estimates for the Prime Minister's Office.
