LOS ANGELES - Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks production company is backing New Zealand director Peter Jackson's next film, "The Lovely Bones," the company said in a statement.

Dreamworks has won a bidding war involving several major Hollywood studios for the right to produce and release Jackson's first film since "King Kong," which will be an adaptation of Alice Sebold's best-selling 2002 novel.

"When you read an emotionally magical story that cries out to be turned into a major motion picture, you hope its winding path can find its way to the door of your own company," Spielberg said in a Dreamworks statement.

"Peter Jackson has made this possible and I'm so grateful to him," he added.

The book tells the story of a teenage girl who is murdered and tries to identify her killer from the afterlife.

Reports said Spielberg had at one stage been considering directing the film but ultimately passed on the project.

Jackson, the Oscar-winning director of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, invited bids for his adaptation of "The Lovely Bones" last week. Reports said Dreamworks outbid Universal, Warner Bros. and Sony.

Filming is due to get underway in the United States and New Zealand, with Jackson teaming with his long-time creative partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
