LOS ANGELES - Comic book heros the Fantastic Four surfed to the top of the North American box office at the weekend, washing "Ocean's 13" into second place, preliminary figures showed Sunday.
The fantasy flick "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" earned 57.4 million dollars in ticket sales, besting last week's top taker, casino-heist "Ocean's 13," which earned 19.1 million dollars.
Holding on to third place was romantic comedy "Knocked Up," with a take of 14.5 million dollars for a total of 90.4 million in three weeks on screens.
The third installment of Johnny Depp's popular high-seas adventure comedy series, "Pirates of the Caribbean: at World's End," took fourth place with 12 million dollars for a total of 273.8 in four weeks.
"Surf's Up," a computer-animated mockumentary about surfing penguins, earned 9.3 million dollars, falling one spot to fifth place.
In sixth was another sequel, "Shrek the Third," which earned 9.3 million for a total of 297.2 million dollars in five weeks in theaters as the upwardly mobile green ogre tries to duck royal duties.
The other entry in this week's top 10 was "Nancy Drew" starring Emma Roberts, niece to Oscar-winner Julia Roberts. The teen sleuth story earned 7.2 million dollars in its opening weekend.
"Hostel: Part II," a gruesome thriller about female travelers who unwittingly check into an eastern European lodging where guests are mutilated for kicks by the rich and powerful, pulled in 7.1 million dollars to take eighth place.
"Mr Brooks," starring Kevin Costner as a family man and serial killer, earned 2.8 million in its third week for ninth place.
"Spider-Man 3" was 10th, netting 2.5 million dollars, for a whopping 330 million dollars in total after seven weeks in the top 10.
Rounding out the top 12 were "Waitress" with 1.3 million dollars and a biopic of French chanteuse Edith Piaf, "La Vie en Rose," which shot from 20th place to 12th and earned 669,000 dollars while playing on only 78 screens.
