Mighty box office opening for 'Evan Almighty'

LOS ANGELES - "Evan Almighty" sailed to the top spot of the North American box office Sunday, besting thriller "1408" with 32.1 million dollars in ticket sales, according to estimates from Exhibitor Relations.

The comedy, starring Steve Carell as a modern-day Noah commanded by Morgan Freeman's God to build an ark, is a sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey vehicle "Bruce Almighty."

Based on a Stephen King horror story, "1408" starring John Cusack opened in the second spot with 20.18 million dollars. Cusack portrays a writer famous for debunking the paranormal who finds terror in a haunted hotel room.

Last week's top earner, fantasy flick "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," earned 20.15 million dollars to sink to third place.

Casino-heist caper "Ocean's 13" was fourth with 11.3 million dollars in sales.

In fifth place was romantic comedy "Knocked Up" with 10.6 million dollars for a total of 109 million after four weeks in theaters.

The third installment of Disney's high-seas adventure series "Pirates of the Caribbean: at World's End," starring Johnny Depp, took sixth place with 7.2 million dollars for a total of 287 million in five weeks.

"Surf's Up," a computer-animated mockumentary about surfing penguins, earned 6.7 million dollars, falling to seventh place.

Another sequel, "Shrek the Third," earned 5.8 million for a total of 308 million dollars since its release six weeks ago, putting it in eighth place.

Teen sleuth caper "Nancy Drew," starring Emma Roberts, niece to Oscar-winner Julia Roberts, took in 4.5 million dollars for the ninth spot.

Also opening this weekend was Angelina Jolie's star turn in "A Mighty Heart," about the murder of journalist Daniel Pearl by Al-Qaeda kidnappers. The film took in 4.0 million dollars in ticket sales, earning 10th place.

Rounding out the top 12 were "Mr Brooks," starring Kevin Costner as a family man and serial killer, with 1.5 million dollars and superhero super hit "Spider-Man 3", which added another 1.3 million dollars to its 333 million dollar take. - AFP/ra
