SINGAPORE : Thousands of students had the exclusive opportunity to catch a preview of this year's National Day Parade at Marina Bay.

An annual affair for all Primary 5 students, this special excursion is part of the National Education programme.

Some 18,000 students from 62 schools gathered at Marina Bay were among the first to catch an almost complete preview of the parade.

While waiting for the parade to start, some were fiddling with the goodies inside their NDP assembly bag or funpack.

There was some pre-parade entertainment as well, including a dragon boat race.

There were plenty of party atmosphere too.

Although the capacity at the Marina Bay venue is smaller than the National Stadium, nothing was going to stop the kids from having fun.

"The parade is different from previous years when it was at the National Stadium. So, it is different atmosphere," said one student.

Another said: "I'm really waiting to see the fireworks and the army doing their flying in those helicopters."

"The soldiers, police and firemen, including our civil service, they're all here. They remind our children that all these people make up Singapore and help build our nation," said Jeanne Phuah, a teacher at Poi Ching School.

Over at Suntec Singapore, the SAF State and Regimental Colours or flags were uncased.

History was made as the Colour Party started its march for the first time ever from Suntec Singapore to Marina Bay.

The colours symbolise the spirit of a regiment and all its tradition, glory and pride. - CNA /ls
