MANILA: Singaporeans abroad are celebrating National Day through food, with Singapore celebrity chef Susan Quah Quimico taking the lead in Philippines.
Aside from her usual Asian fusion menu in the restaurant she runs, this seasoned reality TV cooking show winner is busy preparing her favourite Singapore dishes for her close friends – something that she does every National Day to celebrate her homeland's birthday.
Susan said: "Even though I may be far away from home, I am basically a Singaporean. Through the food that I'm able to prepare, I think I'm very distinctively Singaporean. I bring a part of me that's Singaporean through my cooking."
Her specially marinated, award-winning satay is a big hit with her friends and customers.
It is also one of the things that she misses most after leaving Singapore to live with her Filipino husband.
"When I came here, I was looking for satay and I couldn't find it. In fact, I am actually growing my own herbs to marinate the satay so it has that taste that I grew up eating, something which I cannot forget. I can make do without other things but not satay," she said.
According to Susan, if there is one thing in common with Singaporeans and Filipinos, it is their passion for food.
Through her TV appearances and magazine interviews, this Singaporean food ambassador has been proudly sharing her heritage and dreams of having her own cook show, featuring food from her homeland someday.
