SINGAPORE: There was plenty of action at the Padang when the National Day Parade was going on at Marina Bay, giving those who missed out on the parade tickets a chance to join in the revelry.
Two-year-old Chia Kang Wei was among some 9,000 participants who attempted to form the largest human flag to celebrate Singapore's 42nd birthday.
And these people were eventually rewarded with an entry into the Singapore Book of Records 2008.
The organiser, Young NTUC, said the activity provided a chance for union members to interact and reflect on the labour movement's role in Singapore's success story.
One of the participants, Catherine Phua, said: "Every year, I go out and do something on National Day, so this year I want to come here."
"For the past six years, I've been applying for the NDP ticket through balloting. So far, I've never received any. I see this as another way to attend NDP," said another participant, Gogini Sridevi.
Philip Soh said: "Today is very special for me because I took part in the first National Day Parade here (at the Padang)."
The human flag measuring about 120 by 80 metres was formed twice throughout the evening, one of which was timed to coincide with the state flag flypast.
The participants took just two rehearsals to perfect the record-setting feat, which involved a fair bit of coordination as participants had to open up their umbrellas, move and simulate a wavy flag.
They also had to take precaution to avoid hurting the people around them.
Thousands, who left the comfort of their home for a family get-together at the Padang, caught the parade highlights live at a special screening.
Lindsey Harkins, a tourist from Scotland, said: "I thought it's a great celebration, a great day for everybody. Even our hotel has been putting up things for the children. It's a really nice community, nice spirit."
