SINGAPORE: The Marina Bay floating platform buzzed with activities once again as thousands gathered there, just about a week after it hosted the spectacular National Day Parade.

This time round, the event was the Marina Bay Challenge which was aimed to promote community bonding and volunteerism while raising funds for the less fortunate.

Among the activities for the event was a walkathon which attracted 7,000 participants despite the rain earlier in the day.

President S R Nathan, who flagged off the event, also joined in the walkathon.

Many put on their weekend hats, adding colour to the fun-filled activity.

Meanwhile over 450 people, including Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean and MP Michael Palmer, were kayaking on the waters and enjoying the stunning city skyline.

On land, dancers grooved to the tune of this year's National Day theme song.

Yet another group took part in a dragon boat race down the Singapore River.

The Marina Bay Challenge was organised by the Community Chest, Nanyang Technological University (NTU)'s Welfare Services Club and the People's Association Youth Movement.

It helped to raise some $750,000 for charity. - CNA/ir
