SINGAPORE: Over 270 SMSes were sent to government feedback channel REACH (Reaching Everyone for Active Citizenry @ Home) on Sunday night as viewers watched the 'live' telecast of the National Day Rally.
This is double the number it received last year and response from the heartlands was particularly strong.
The responses started coming in just minutes after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong began his National Day Rally speech.
Dr Amy Khor, chairperson of REACH, said: "REACH is going to summarise all the responses that we have, from the SMSes to our emails and dialogue sessions, and we will submit them to the PM as well as to the relevant ministries and agencies to consider when they are looking into the implementation details of the policy changes."
REACH said the emphasis on bread-and-butter issues in PM Lee's speech moved many Singaporeans to give their feedback.
And for the first time, one in five SMSes sent was in Mandarin.
REACH said it is pleased with the response rate, but it expects more feedback to come in over the course of the week, especially since some of the issues raised, like changes to the CPF, require some time to digest.
Moving forward, Dr Khor feels it is important to explain these policy changes in greater detail to Singaporeans, particularly the fact that most of these changes will only come into effect some years later.
