SINGAPORE: According to Foreign Minister George Yeo, there has been significant progress in efforts to bring about national reconciliation in Myanmar.

Mr Yeo said on Sunday, at the sidelines of the Community Bonding Carnival @ Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, that UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari has been doing good work in Myanmar.

Dr Gambari will be giving an update on Myanmar to leaders at the East Asia Summit on Wednesday.

"There has been significant progress and we hope that that can continue in the future and bring about national reconciliation in that country. But coming here, we're actually creating a symbolic expression of support for his good work and I believe it'll help him in his work in Myanmar. It'll help to bring the government and the various groups and Aung Sung Suu Kyi together," said Mr Yeo.

On the issue of drafting the ASEAN Charter, the foreign minister was asked about the involvement of civil society organisations, which have claimed that they were not consulted.

The ASEAN Charter, which aims to deepen the integration of the ten-member grouping, is expected to be signed by the leaders on Tuesday.

Mr Yeo said: "Many were involved in the process. The Charter itself is a significant document and we'll set the stage for a new phase in ASEAN development. They should be involved. They should link up with one another, they should help the government, and they should work the different organisations to promote the idea of ASEAN."
