SINGAPORE - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Sunday rejected the imposition of sanctions against the military government in Myanmar, saying they hurt the civilian population but not the generals.
"Economic sanctions are not good and would not make the leaders of Myanmar die," Mr Hun Sen told a business forum in Singapore on the eve of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
"It is more of a disaster for the civilians. So one should not play the game of sanctions," the Cambodian prime minister said.
The ASEAN talks are expected to focus on the situation in member state Myanmar following its crackdown on pro-democracy protests, led by Buddhist monks, which triggered international outrage.
The United States and the European Union imposed tougher sanctions against Myanmar's rulers in the wake of September's violence, which left at least 15 people dead, according to a UN rights envoy who visited the country last week.
ASEAN countries have come under mounting pressure to take action against Myanmar but the bloc has repeatedly refused, citing its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states. - AFP/ir
