BANGKOK : A United Nations commission has called on ASEAN leaders to address development gaps among the 10 members, to build a more integrated community.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific said that bridging the disparities between highly advanced members and poorer, more isolated nations will be one of the regional grouping's main challenges ahead.
It also recommends that ASEAN stress good governance and transparency.
The recommendations were part of a study on the challenges and opportunities for ASEAN integration.
Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Secretary, UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific, said, "...unless the developments gaps are addressed, social grievances will cross borders. And it's extremely important that we address the social grievances of the people of ASEAN as a community in order to ensure that there is true integration and true cooperation and partnership." - CNA/ms
