SINGAPORE : The 13th ASEAN Summit has been successful, said Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Speaking at a media conference on Wednesday, he singled out the signing of the ASEAN Charter which will make the grouping more cohesive and competitive.
On Myanmar, Mr Abdullah said all the members have expressed their views and ASEAN maintains its position on Myanmar.
He said, "Of course there was some disappointment. At the same time, they knew that this was thoroughly discussed by ASEAN, and ASEAN has decided that support be given to Dr Gambari, who is a special ambassador to the Secretary-General of United Nations, who is now very actively pursuing the objective... the objective that has to be return to democracy, normalisation of the political situation in Myanmar, and that there should be reconciliation.
"A number of statements that ASEAN has made in New York before, has been included, which means we stand by what we said in New York, but that was on the margin of the UN General Assembly." - CNA/ms
