KORAT, Thailand: The Singapore men had come unstuck, so it was left to the women to do the business on the final day of SEA Games wushu competition in Korat.
Ng Xin Ni and Deng Ying Zhi stunned the contenders to win in the duilian category, ending a 14-year gold medal drought for Singapore's women exponents in wushu.
Competing at the Chanapolkhan Institute of Technology, they chalked up a score of 9.48 points to clinch gold.
Vietnam (9.46) took silver while Myanmar and Thailand were tied for third spot with 9.4 points.
For 26-year old Deng, the win was welcome relief, as she said: "This was one of our last events for the competition and the pressure was on us to deliver the gold.
"Our strongest competitors were the Vietnamese and the scores were quite close … we're lucky we won. Xin Ni is studying in China and I'm working in Singapore so we only trained together for about two months this year. We made some minor mistakes in our routine … but we recovered and the competition went smoothly for us."
Team manager Ng Kee said: "Xin Ni and Ying Zhi were very good today and I'm happy that they delivered the gold medal for Singapore."
The seven-member wushu squad will return to Singapore with one gold and two silvers. - TODAY
