KORAT, Thailand : Singapore's water polo team continued their winning streak by capturing the gold medal for the 22nd time in Korat, proving once again that they are the team to beat in Southeast Asia.
The victory set a SEA Games record for one of the longest winning runs in the sport.
They sealed the gold by winning their final match against Indonesia 13-6.
"I am just feeling extremely happy, very ecstatic because we've proved everyone wrong. Everyone is thinking that we're the youngest team Singapore has ever sent. We've done our best to prove everyone wrong and showed them that (even though) we're young, we can still do it," said Nigel Tay, the youngest player in the water polo team.
The 19-year-old Tay is the goalkeeper. The average age of the team is 22 years old.
The scores were never even close; Singapore's average winning margin over the five matches was 9.2 points.
Singapore vs Thailand: 15-5
Singapore vs Philippines: 7-3
Singapore vs Vietnam: 20-7
Singapore vs Malaysia: 15-3
Singapore vs Indonesia: 13-6
Singapore scored consistently in double digits, except for the match against the Philippines, who were also the strongest opponents.
Said Terence Tan, five-time SEA Games Gold Medalist, Water Polo Team: "Our biggest challenge was our 8 new players, who are playing their first SEA Games... to bring these guys up to win this tournament."
The team's winning ways will continue to make headlines at every SEA Games, and it'll be an even bigger story if or when the team is dethroned. - CNA /ls
