KORAT, Thailand : Thailand wowed home crowds on Tuesday as its footballers reached the final of their competition and athletes took four more golds on the final day of track and field action.

The hosts thumped Singapore 3-0, securing them the chance to earn their eighth consecutive win in this tournament if they can overcome the unfancied but plucky minnows Myanmar.

In front of fanatical home support, Thailand opened the scoring from a corner midway through the first half when Wuttichai Tatong headed in after Singapore goalkeeper Hassan Sunny failed to clear.

After the opener the Thais began to look more threatening, breaking powerfully from midfield while Singapore were unable to keep control of the ball for long periods and lacked cutting edge.

Just before half-time Thailand made it 2-0 after Singapore lost possession, with Anon Sangsanoi eventually putting the ball past a despairing Sunny.

Singapore emerged after the break with renewed determination but could not put the Thais under sustained pressure.

Thailand put the game beyond Singapore with less than a quarter of an hour to go when the dangerous Teeratep Winothai pulled the ball back for Prat Samakrat to score from close range.

Thai coach Thongsuk Sampahangsit said Singapore's long-ball approach had played into his team's hands.

"We did our homework and planned for that," he said.

Unfancied Myanmar defeated Vietnam in the day's earlier semi-final 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended goalless.

Thailand, meanwhile, secured their place at the top of the athletics medal table on Tuesday, the final day of track and field action.

The host nation's Wassana Winatho won the heptathlon with a Games record of 5,889 points, securing a place at next year's Beijing Olympics.

Her countryman Saowalee Kaewchuy came home to win the women's 400 metres but in the men's race, the Philippines' Julius Felicisimo Nierras Jr edged out Thailand's Jukkatip Pojaroen.

Further success for the host nation saw Sanya Buathong win the men's javelin and Thitima Muangjan took the women's triple jump with a new Games record of 13.85m.

Wassana, 27, who also won the 400m hurdles at these Games, was delighted to have overcome bad health at the beginning of the month and knee surgery undertaken earlier this year.

"I'm tired after this event but I'm really happy to have qualified for the Olympics," she added, following treatment from medical staff.

Indonesia's Suryo Agung Wibowo won the men's 200m to add to his 100m victory and in the women's 200m final, Vietnam's Thi Huong Vu also made it a sprint double following her 100m success on Friday.

Indonesia's Triyaningsih, 20, meanwhile, won the women's 10,000m to add to her 5,000m gold.

The diminutive runner said she was proud of her double victory.

"I was confident of winning at the SEA Games but I had to keep trying right to the finish and ignore my opponents," she added.

In the overall competition Thailand currently has 97 golds, Vietnam 46 and Singapore 37.

There were six events on the final night of competition in the swimming pool. Games records were set by Malaysia's Daniel Bego in the men's 200m freestyle and the Philippines' James Walsh in the 200m butterfly. - AFP/ir/de
