HANOI : Vietnam's football coach Austrian Alfred Riedl resigned on Wednesday following criticism from fans and officials over his side's performance at the SEA Games, state media reported.
Riedl, 58, had a meeting with Vietnam Football Federation (VVF) officials on Tuesday after his U23 team lost 1-3 in a penalty shootout against Myanmar in Thailand, and he stepped down on Wednesday, state television said.
"Coach Riedl submitted his resignation this morning," said federation spokesman Nguyen Lan Trung, according to state media reports, adding that VFF General Secretary Tran Quoc Tuan had accepted the resignation.
Riedl had a farewell meeting with his squad and was heading back to Hanoi.
"The reason for his resignation in his letter was the team's bad performance in the SEA Games, that Vietnam's team did not meet the goal of entering the final," said the Dan Tri (People's Knowledge) newspaper in an online report.
Deputy coach Mai Duc Chung was temporarily placed in charge of the squad.
Riedl could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday. - AFP/de
