SEA Games: Two days left for Singapore's cuesports team to deliver gold

KORAT, Thailand : After six days of competition, Singapore's cuesports team are still chasing a gold medal.

So far, the team have won two silver and two bronze medals, with two days of competition left at the SEA Games.

Speaking after Wednesday's action at the Sima Thani Hotel in Korat, Thailand, team manager Kenneth Lim admitted the medal haul was a little disappointing.

"So far, we have been slightly under par," he said.

"Mostly though, we've played our best and we will do the same over the last two days.

"We'll just have to take it one game at a time.

"One thing you can be sure of, there are no sure wins here, the competition is really very stiff."

Much of the team's hopes rested on the shoulders of Peter Gilchrist, the Englishman who coached the national team for four years before becoming a Singapore citizen last year.

The 1994 and 2001 world billiards champion represented Singapore at last December's Asian Games, where he won a bronze medal.

In October, he set a world record for a billiards break with a score of 1,346 points, to eclipse the previous mark of 1,276.

Gilchrist won a bronze last Friday in tandem with Keith E and Lim Chun Kiat in the men's snooker team event, but saw his SEA Games campaign end on a low note on Wednesday when he and English billiards doubles partner Alan Puan were beaten 3-2 by Thai pair Praprut Chaithanasakun and Thawat Sujaritthurakarn in a thrilling quarter-final battle.

Praput, who Gilchrist coached six years ago when he was in Thailand, was also the one who dispatched Gilchrist 3-2 in the English billiards singles quarter-finals en route to gold.

"We lost because they played extremely well. Peter's definitely disappointed, but defeats motivate him even further. He will learn from his mistakes and get on with it," said Lim.

In Thursday's action, Keith E and Lim Chun Kiat will go in the men's snooker singles pre quarter-final, while Chan Keng Kwang will do battle in the 9-Ball pool singles quarter-final. -
