SINGAPORE: Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said it is healthy for Singaporeans to be asking if the government is doing enough after each Budget debate.

But he added that most do understand that it is important to first grow the economy and create jobs so that there will be resources to help those in need.

The minister was responding to a reporter's question as to why some Singaporeans are expecting the government to give more back to the people.

"So long as we (the government, the voluntary welfare organisations as well as committed individuals) maintain the fundamentals – meaning hard work and discipline, self reliance, family responsibility and a collective community response – we would have an effective social safety net sustainable for the long term," said Dr Balakrishnan.

He was speaking at an event in Northwest District on Thursday to honour the organisations and individuals who have helped the community there.

Welfare organisation Bo Tien Welfare Services Society received one of three awards on Thursday night – The Partner Award – for contributing about S$1 million of food ration over ten years to needy people.

Benny Chua, Honorary Secretary of Bo Tien Welfare Services Society, said: "With this award, it could be made known to the public that we have this organisation doing charity work. Hopefully they can come forward to help us."
