TAIPEI: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Taiwan on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake hit at 2:28 am (1828 GMT) and was centred 50 kilometres northeast of T'ai-tung, the USGS said. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue an advisory about the quake.
Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. - AFP/de
