TAIPEI: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Taiwan on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake hit at 2:28 am (1828 GMT) and was centred 50 kilometres northeast of T'ai-tung, the USGS said. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue an advisory about the quake.
