SINGAPORE : The Singapore Management University (SMU) is making a push to establish itself as a major international hub for research in Financial Economics.

A S$17 million endowment fund has been set up to help provide funding for its newly-established Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics.

Named after the former head of the Civil Service, the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics is the latest addition to SMU's stable of institutes and centres of excellence.

Roberto S Mariano, Director, Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics, said: "With the kind of research and training programmes that we will be undertaking in partnership with the industry, with (the) government, Singapore will really attract not only students but also international researchers in different aspects of financial economics and financial econometrics..."

The new institute will focus on four major research areas - Financial Econometrics, "Silver" Security, Asset Securitisation in Asia, and Investor & Corporate Responsibility.

It is expected to help attract more research talent into the university.

Howard Hunter, President, SMU, said: "We have already attracted and will be able to attract even more very important and influential people from all over the world to come here to work with our faculty and with our students.

"So it will be an enormous benefit to our faculty as well as to our students and, through their joint efforts, make quite significant contributions to Singapore and its development, regionally and beyond the region as well."

Money raised by the endowment fund will go towards advancing research and education in the institute. - CNA/ms
