SINGAPORE : Temasek Foundation and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are funding a project that will bring earthquake-resistance technology to West Sumatra - an earthquake-prone part of Indonesia.

The project, which costs about S$313,000, is a joint endeavour between NTU's Lien Institute for the Environment and Indonesia's Universitas Andalas Padang (UNAND). It will take place at Lasi Polyclinic, in the Agam District.

There are three parts to the project. The first involves strengthening Lasi's main polyclinic to improve earthquake resistance. This is to ensure the training facility can be used as a model building to showcase good construction practices.

The second is to improve sanitation and clean water supply, while the third is to train the locals in good construction practices.

A group of 20 faculty members from UNAND's Department of Civil Engineering will train the locals for half a year. This includes 45 local masons who will learn proper construction and canvas strengthening techniques.

Eventually, 450 more local masons are expected to learn these techniques when the pioneer batch of trainees begins sharing their skills. - CNA/ms
