BEIJING: Eight pandas were flown to Beijing from Sichuan Province to join in the fanfare of the upcoming Olympic Games.

The giant pandas came from the Wolong Panda Nature Reserve in Sichuan, and were sent to Beijing shortly after the May 12 earthquake.

The pandas have been lavished with tender loving care, from special dietary needs to a temperature controlled enclosure to help them cope with the Beijing heat.

Four air conditioners ensure the temperature is kept below 25 degrees Celsius at all times.

Wu Daifu, a panda keeper from Sichuan, said: "We show our love and care for them. We talk to them, play with them and give them treats every day, as though we are friends."

Wu said the pandas had lost weight following the earthquake and during the move to Beijing, but have since gained back the weight as they got acclimatised to their new surroundings.

The two-year-old pandas now weigh about 60 kilogrammes each.

They are expected to meet some six million tourists during their time in Beijing.
