SINGAPORE: The chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Co-ordination Commission has told Singapore that it should start operational planning for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) by September.
Mr Sergey Bubka said this after Singapore presented an update on the event's preparations at the 120th IOC session in Beijing on Wednesday.
Singapore announced on Saturday that it would be changing the venue for the YOG village. It cited rising construction costs as the reason for switching from the yet-to-be completed University Town at the National University of Singapore to the alternative site at Nanyang Technological University.
Singapore beat Moscow in February this year to win the right to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. Since then, much has been done, such as the setting up of an organising committee and various sub-committees.
Regular updates have also been given to the IOC, whose members visited the city after it won the bid.
Speaking to Channel NewsAsia from Beijing, Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee chairman, Ng Ser Miang, said the committee had agreed with the IOC on a set of timelines.
"A foundation plan would be completed by September and then we will move into operational planning. So Sergey's comment highlights the very tight time frame that we have... As far as we are concerned, we both agree with IOC that everything is on schedule," he said.
