JAKARTA: A 6.0-magnitude quake struck off Indonesia's island of Sumatra Friday, but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage, officials said.
The quake struck at 1:37pm (0637 GMT), 140 kilometres southeast of Mentawai islands in West Sumatra, the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency said via text message.
"There's no reports of damage so far," an agency geologist identified as Aji told AFP, adding that no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, the text message said.
Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 that killed 168,000 people in the country's Aceh province.
The Indonesian archipelago sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet causing seismic and volcanic activity.
