BEIJING: With the Olympic Games in Beijing, many Chinese have been flocking to bookshops to check out Olympic-related books.
At one of the largest bookstores in Beijing, there are as many titles as there are buyers and browsers. Titles range from the meaning of the Olympics to a virtual tour of cities that have hosted the Games.
Zhang Zheng, assistant sales manager at the Beijing Book Centre, said: "Our books range from history and culture to sports venues. We even have imported English books to cater to foreign tourists."
Since China's successful bidding of the Games in 2001, interest in various aspects of the Olympics has been growing. But what really triggered the interest was the start of the 100-day countdown of the Games.
Liu Pengfei, an Anhui native, said: "I'm hoping to pick up books relating to the Olympic venues, and other places of interest in Beijing."
"The Olympics has aroused my interest in Beijing's ancient culture and architecture," said Suo Xiaolu, a Shanxi native.
The large number of tourism-related books has also encouraged many to plan their holiday getaways.
Yang Yufeng, a Beijing native, said: "We're here to purchase Olympic travel books, and hope to tour as much of China as possible, starting with Beijing and areas nearer to Beijing."
"I've always thought of visiting Guilin since there's an ancient saying that the scenery there is the best in the world," said Ma Yan, another Beijing native.
If China tops the Olympic gold medal tally, bookshops predict that sales will continue to be brisk, given that publishers will be keen to come up with commemorative and other Olympic-related books.
