BEIJING : Rescuers were rushing Sunday to the epicentre of a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck southwest China leaving at least 25 people dead and over 300 injured, state press reported.

The quake struck the border region between Sichuan and Yunnan provinces late Saturday afternoon leaving up to 130,000 homes damaged or collapsed in Yunnan alone, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sichuan was struck by a 8.1-magnitude quake on May 12 that left nearly 88,000 people dead or missing in the most devastating earthquake to strike China in over 30 years.

Xinhua reported that 17 people were confirmed dead, three missing and 192 injured in Sichuan's Huili county as of Sunday morning in the latest quake.

Three others were also killed in Sichuan's Panzhihua city near the epicentre, while five were confirmed dead in Yunnan province, the agency said.

China's civil affairs ministry put the toll at 21 dead on Sunday morning.

Over 2,000 rescuers had been sent to the quake zone, bringing in tents, food, water and medical supplies, the Xinhua report said.

It added since Saturday's quake there have been 176 aftershocks, including 20 measuring over 3.0 in magnitude.
