SINGAPORE: The first Singapore Formula One night race is roaring into town in less than a month, and for those who cannot afford pricey hotel rooms during the F1 season, backpacker hostels have become an attractive option.
At Tresor Tavern, customers typically pay about S$28 a night, which is quite a good deal if one does not mind sharing his room with nine others.
Even though the rates have gone up by 20 per cent, eight in ten beds at the Tavern have been booked, and hostel managers are confident that they will see full occupancy next month.
Josefine Fun, co-owner of Tresor Tavern, said: "When they come around and enquire about the package, we will include the tickets as part of the package. We will also collect the tickets for them, so it becomes much more convenient."
For those who want their privacy, there are other affordable options too. At The Hive, private rooms are available, but these have all been booked two months ago for the F1.
With hotel rates costing as much as three times more, it is of no surprise that even without much publicity, backpacker hostels are giving upmarket hotels a run for their money.
