SINGAPORE : Some three in 10 small companies received skills training help from the Skills Development Fund (SDF) in the last two years.
In the financial year of 2006, S$108 million in Skills Development Levy was collected and S$110 million in expenditure under the SDF was committed to fund 3,400 companies with fewer than 10 employees.
Last year, S$120 million in levy was collected, with S$102 million committed to fund 3,200 small firms.
Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong released these figures on Tuesday in a written reply to Sembawang GRC MP Dr Lim Wee Kiak's question in Parliament on Monday.
Mr Gan said small and medium enterprises (SMEs) get double the typical funding norm for larger companies.
SMEs can also receive funding for executive and managerial training, of up to 50 per cent of the course fees. This is capped at S$20 per trainee per hour.
Mr Gan said the Workforce Development Agency actively works with SPRING Singapore and industry associations to reach out to SMEs to encourage them to tap into the SDF.
As a result of these efforts, the value of SDF training assistance for companies with fewer than 100 employees has nearly doubled from S$29 million in FY06 to S$42 million in FY07. - CNA/ms
