SINGAPORE: There is over a year to go before the 2010 Youth Olympics, and so far, some 12,000 volunteers have signed up.

Organisers are confident that they will meet their target of 20,000 volunteers in due time.

The youngest to come forward is 13-year-old Kristof Portscher, who sees the Games as a way to make more friends.

From September this year, training for Kristof and other volunteers will begin with a series of practical lessons and online modules covering topics such as safety measures and the history of the Olympics.

They will then be sent to help out in areas like marketing and logistics.

The Youth Olympic Games will take place from August 14 to 26 next year.
