SINGAPORE: Thailand’s under-14 side beat their Malaysian counterparts 2-1 in an entertaining encounter at Victoria Junior College on Wednesday, turning Group C on its head at the inaugural Asian Youth Games (AYG).
Skipper Insiri Charoenruen scored a penalty and a free-kick in the second-half to seal victory for the Thais.
With Thailand, North Korea and Malaysia all recording a win and a loss each, the group was decided not on goal difference - that was tied at zero for all three sides - but on the number of goals scored.
And it was Thailand, the lowest-placed team going into yesterday's matches, who ended up topping the group.
Having lost 3-2 to North Korea last Saturday, the Thais' win on Wednesday took their goal tally to four.
The North Koreans finished second with three goals to their name, meaning Malaysia finished last by virtue of having scored one goal less than the Koreans.
Despite the Philippines and Hong Kong withdrawing from the competition, organisers have decided against changing the competition format.
This means that the winners of Group A, C and D - with three or less teams in the group - qualify for the final group stages, with the winners and runners-up of four-team Group B also going through.
The two best second-placed teams from the three out of Group A, C and D also qualify, along with hosts Singapore.
The final group stage kicks off on Saturday with Group A.
Iran play Singapore at Jalan Besar Stadium at 5pm, while Thailand take on China at 7.30pm.

Group C: Thailand 2 Malaysia 1
