SINGAPORE: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday evening.

During their meeting, both men discussed Mr Ban's upcoming trip to Myanmar and Mr Lee reaffirmed Singapore's support for UN efforts there. They also exchanged views on the economic crisis and other challenges facing the global community.

This is Mr Ban's first trip to Singapore since taking office in 2007. He was accompanied by UN's special envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, and other senior officials.

Mr Ban was later hosted to dinner by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the Istana.

Mr Goh, who was in Myanmar last month, shared Singapore's perspectives on developments in the country.

He said he hoped that Mr Ban's visit would lead to progress in national reconciliation and emphasised the important role that the UN could play in this respect by engaging all the stakeholders.

The UN chief leaves for Myanmar on Friday morning.
