SINGAPORE : The World Swimming Championships kick off in Italy next weekend, and Singapore's national swim team is practising hard to take on the world's best.
25 swimmers will be heading to Rome on Monday to acclimatise for a week. They include Singapore's Asian Games gold medallist Tao Li.
Unlike her team-mate Quah Ting Wen, who was crowned Most Valuable Female Player at the recently concluded Asian Youth Games (AYG), Tao has not been in action since last month's Singapore Open.
Tao, who was too old to take part in the AYG, said exam preparations have affected her preparation for the world stage.
National head coach Ang Peng Siong said the main objective of competing in the World Championships is to prepare the swimmers for December's Southeast Asian Games.
And their performances next week could also be indicative of their qualifying chances for the 2012 Olympics.
Ang Peng Siong, national head coach of the Singapore Swimming Association, said: "Targets (are to have) at least one swimmer making top eight and two swimmers making top 16. And for the relays, we are hoping for one relay team making top 16 and eventually another relay team making top 20." - CNA /ls
