SINGAPORE: For the first time, Singapore is hosting the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships which is expected to be hotly contested, ahead of the Youth Olympic Games here in 2010.

Over 600 young fencers from 24 countries will duel it out in six categories, starting on Thursday.

Singapore will be represented by a squad of 24 fencers in both the under-17 Cadet and the under-20 Junior categories.

Fencing Singapore's general manager Loo Luan Luan said on Wednesday that the event is crucial for the selection of Singapore's Youth Olympic Games squad.

"This competition is actually very important for the fencers. After this, we will reduce the squad from five to three. All the countries are sending their good fencers," she said.
