SINGAPORE: Some states in Malaysia have been affected by a sugar shortage. They include Sabah, Penang, Selangor and Johor.
However, the Malaysian government has said the country's sugar supply will be fully recovered by the end of this week.
Singapore, which imports 20 per cent of its sugar from Malaysia, has not been affected by the recent sugar scarcity.
Most supermarkets here have agreed to increase its supply of sugar. This comes ahead of Ramadan, when Muslims break their daily fast with an array of traditional food.
NTUC FairPrice, which imports 10 per cent of its sugar from Malaysia, said it has adequate supplies of sugar.
Tng Ah Yiam, director of Integrated Purchasing, NTUC FairPrice, said: "About 95 per cent of our sugars are from Australia and Thailand and we have a long-term contract with all our suppliers, including our packer for housebrand sugar as well.
"So rest assured that we have enough sugars for all our shoppers. We have six to eight weeks of stockpile, so in case of any sudden surge in demand, we are able to fulfil the requirements." - CNA/vm
